A gourmet cupcake shop in the US has added a romantic twist to one of its bestsellers by adding a platinum and diamond engagement ring.

Philadelphia-based Cupcakes Gourmet launched its made-to-order Red Velvet Cupcake in time for Valentine's Day.

They come complete with an eight-carat diamond engagement ring a platinum setting from Warwick Jewelers.

"There's no sweeter way to pop the question to your significant other than with a dreamy cupcake with a diamond engagement ring sitting on top," said Maki Garcia-Evans, owner and executive pastry chef at Cupcakes Gourmet.

"A diamond is worth a thousand words, but with a cupcake, it's worth more."

Barry Maglin, owner of Warwick Jewelers, adds that popping the question with an engagement ring and cupcake is "simply romantic".

Smaller versions of the $55,000 ring are available, starting from half a carat, with prices varying depending on the sparkler's quality.
