Platinum drug leads ovarian cancer battle 16th November 2006

It has been revealed that significant progress has been achieved in developing drugs to battle ovarian cancer, with a platinum-based product leading the way.

A team of researchers in Greece, the UK and US have been working on developing new combinations of chemotherapy to prolong the life of people with ovarian cancer.

According to the study, a platinum and taxane-based drug which is administered directly into the abdominal cavity can help to reduce the risk of death by as much as 55 per cent.

The report, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggests that an increase in collaborative efforts between scientists is needed so as to develop complementary trials to find the most effective combination.
