Platinum-chromium stent trials commence 10th October 2011
Clinical trials of Boston Scientific Corporation's latest platinum-chromium coronary stent system are due to get underway as the company announces patient enrolment has begun.
The trials will test the safety and effectiveness of its new OMEGA Platinum Chromium Bare-Metal Coronary Stent System in treating patients with a single coronary artery lesion.
"I am enthusiastic about enrolling patients in the OMEGA trial and the potential this advanced bare-metal stent platform holds as a treatment option for patients with coronary artery disease," said Dr John Wang, of Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
"The new alloy and design of the OMEGA stent promise to offer improved deliverability and visibility, even in patients with complex and challenging anatomy."
The OMEGA Stent System, which received CE Mark approval in March 2011, is part of Boston Scientific's platinum-chromium stent series, which includes the ION Paclitaxel-Eluting Stent System and the PROMUS Element Everolimus-Eluting Stent System.
In August, the US Department of Energy hailed the development of the company's platinum-chromium alloy, saying it has increased the safety of the medical procedure by allowing more flexible and comfortable coronary stents.
According to the government department, the platinum-chromium alloy "solves many of the past problems surrounding traditional stents".
