Platinum bird goes on show 11th April 2007
A platinum and gold bird perched on a 128 carat diamond is going on show in the US this week.
The Tiffany Diamond is one of the world's largest diamonds and the Bird on a Rock sits beautifully on its prize.
It has been revealed that the Tiffany Diamond, complete with the spectacular platinum and gold Bird on a rock, is now on show at the famous Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington.
The diamond has been loaned to the Smithsonian from Tiffany and Co until September this year.
The platinum and gold bird, which has a striking ruby eye and is encrusted with gems, was designed by Jean Schlumberger in the 1960s, while the 128.54 carat diamond was mined in South Africa in 1877 and cut from its original 287.42 carats by George Frederick Kunz.
Jeffrey Post, curator of the museum's National Gem Collection, said that the Tiffany Diamond is the largest currently on public display anywhere in the US.
