Platinum beneficiation reaping rewards 23rd October 2007

Platinum beneficiation projects in South Africa are beginning to bring dividends to the country, as platinum continues to take a larger chunk of the bridal market.

The Southern African reports that gold and silver "may soon be overtaken by platinum" as the top metal of choice for women getting married all over the world, thanks in part to the promotional efforts of platinum producers in South Africa.

South Africa and other African countries are utilising the growing demand for platinum by insisting upon their own stake in the processing of the precious metal, something that has previously been largely the preserve of Chinese and Indian companies.

Increased investment in the local communities has helped platinum miners to develop the metal and an increasing number of platinum producers are now making products made from the precious metal more affordable and accessible to local communities, by ensuring that they are processed in those communities.

The South African points to the transformation of Burgersfort as one example of the impact the platinum mining beneficiation approach can have. The small village has been transformed into a major city thanks to R1.5 billion of investment in property development from nearby mining firms.
