Platinum-based chemotherapy helps tackle uterine cancer 13th September 2005

Platinum-based chemotherapy can deliver positive results in treating uterine cancer according to new research.

A new study published by researchers from Yale in the Gynecologic Oncology journal reveals that a new programme of treatment based on the precious metal can result in fewer recurrences of the cancer and also improve survival times.

Used specifically with uterine papillary serous carcinoma (UPSC) – a relatively uncommon form of the disease but also aggressive – the treatment is designed to complement surgery.

The disease is prone to re-emergence, with the use of the platinum-based chemotherapy drugs by the scientists designed to combat this recurrence.

A study of 74 stage I UPSC patients who were treated between 1987 and 2004 indicated that survival was significantly better among women treated with the chemotherapy.
