Pilanesberg shutdown 'will not affect pgm production' 10th June 2009
PGM production at Platmin's Pilanesberg mine in South Africa will not be affected by its recent closure, it was confirmed yesterday (9th June).
Operations at the mine, located on the Bushveld Complex, were suspended last Friday by the country's department of minerals and energy's safety inspectorate.
Management are currently involved in talks with the authorities to get the green light to recommence work, but Platmin said in a news release that production and commissioning will not be impacted.
The company is attempting to ramp Pilanesberg up to full production as it aims to target its substantial mineral reserves, which are thought to total 4.4 million ounces 3E pgm.
According to estimates, it should be able to offer about 250,000 oz per year in pgm output for the first 11 years of its expected 16-year lifespan.
Platmin's other projects on the Bushveld Complex - which is believed to contain 90 per cent of the world's pgm resources - are at Mphahlele, Grootboom and Loskop.
