A number of platinum jewellery designers have landed a prize equivalent to $20,000 after winning a prestigious competition, it has been confirmed.

Platinum Guild International (PGI) launched its 'Platinum Innovation Challenge' to promote the precious metal to a wider demographic by celebrating pieces worth less than $2,500.

The marketing body compiled a panel of editors, retailers, stylists and a casting specialist to assess the 75 designs put forward by more than 40 top brands at the recent JCK Las Vegas Show.

Designs by Vatche triumphed in the entry platinum engagement ring under $2,500 category for its 'Jennifer' semi-mount offering, featuring 0.40 carats of diamonds around the head and shank.

In the entry platinum wedding bands under $1,500 category, True Knots was honoured for its 5mm men's wedding band, which can be snapped up for $998.

Meanwhile, Uneek's $1,995 'Snowflake' pendant with round diamonds on a platinum chain was selected as the winner in the best entry platinum fashion under $2,500 segment.

Benchmark won for best entry platinum colour under $2,500 for its men's 8.5m wedding band featuring pave-set black diamonds wrapped around a satin-finish concave design.

Finally, the panel decided to honour Steven Kretchmer in the platinum fashion over $2,500 category for its 'Mini Infinity' bracelet, which features 23 tension-set diamonds and retails for $30,200.

The 'Platinum Innovation Prize' received by the winners includes a retailer signage package and inclusion in PGI's upcoming marketing campaigns.

PGI was founded in 1975 and is fully funded by leading platinum producers and refiners.
