The Perth Mint of Australia has released the 2012 Australian Platinum Platypus bullions coins.

Struck from 1oz of 99.95 per cent pure platinum, the legal tender coin features a design of a diving platypus on side, and an image of Queen Elizabeth II on the other.

The Mint said no more than 30,000 coins will be released.

"Issued for the first time in 2011, the Australian Platypus sold out its initial annual mintage, reflecting healthy investor interest in platinum as a safe-haven hard asset in times of financial uncertainty," it added.

The coins have a diameter of 32.60 mm, weigh 31.12 grams, and are presented in an acrylic capsule.

Other national mints offer platinum coins of their own. The Royal Canadian Mint produces the Platinum Maple Leaf in bullion format, while the US makes the American Platinum Eagle, though only in numismatic versions since 2009.
