Penalties for polluting diesel trucks coming to London 22nd January 2008

Regulations compelling the owners of the most environmentally harmful diesel engine vehicles to pay a charge of £200 to enter London are due to come into force next month.

The rule is part of the Transport for London's imposition of the low emission zone (LEZ) in London in a bid to improve air quality in the capital, the Times reports.

Those most likely to be affected by the legislation are owners of older models of trucks, lorries and coaches, which do not have the diesel particulate filters that are a feature of newer diesel vehicles.

The emissions standards imposed by the legislation will be phased-in, with February 4th seeing the introduction of the rule that all diesel engine lorries weighing 12 tonnes or over must meet Euro III emissions standard.

Subsequently, as of July 7th all vehicles weighing 13 tonnes or more will be expected to meet the standard and finally on October 4th 2010, all vehicles exceeding 1.205 tonnes must be within its limits.
