Palladium utilised in triple combination prostate cancer treatment 19th August 2009

Palladium 103 implants play a key role in a three-pronged treatment that has encouraging results in male high-grade prostate cancer patients, it emerged yesterday (18th August).

Richard G Stock and colleagues at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York conducted studies on 181 patients with Gleason scores of between eight and ten.

They were treated with a combination of the palladium implants (prescription dose 100 Gy), 45 Gy of external beam radiotherapy and nine months' worth of hormone therapy.

According to Renal and Urology News, the tests covered eight-year actuarial freedom from biochemical failure, freedom from distant metastases, prostate cancer-specific survival and overall survival rates.

The results, which were published in BJU International, showed that respective success rates of 73 per cent, 80 per cent, 87 per cent and 79 per cent were achieved.

Palladium, which was discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston, has both the lowest density and lowest melting point of any pgm.
