Palladium-hallmarked badge presented to Birmingham Assay Office 26th October 2009
A new badge which features the first components to receive palladium hallmarking in Birmingham has been presented to the city's assay office.
The item, which was designed and made by former silversmith Martyn Pugh, was influenced by a number of leading figures from the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter.
Michael Allchin, Chief Executive and Assay Master of the Birmingham Assay Office, received the badge and was full of praise for its unique and compelling character.
He said: "Martyn has successfully delivered what the wardens commissioned. This piece references our traditions and our past but focuses on innovation, which has always been key to our future.
"We are extremely grateful to all those who have contributed to this project. I am very proud to wear this badge of office."
Mr Pugh's design depicts the structure of a palladium atom, while also featuring coloured flames to represent fire assaying, which is the traditional approach to cupellation.
In addition, the badge contains a read-out from an X-ray fluorescence machine - which assays pieces before they are hallmarked - and an anchor, which is the symbol of the assay office.
The palladium hallmark was introduced on a voluntary basis in July 2009 and is set to become mandatory on 31st December.
