A prestigious competition for British jewellers is set to focus on pieces crafted from palladium for its 2010 instalment.

The British Jewellers' Association (BJA) has established two categories for its BJA Award 2010 - 'A Commercial Suite of Jewellery' and 'A Single Statement Design'.

For the first, entrants must submit at least three complementary pieces, while the second involves demonstrating the "colour, lightness and durability" of palladium.

"The judges will be looking for something a bit different and entries must be designed and made in the UK," said the BJA in relation to the second category.

Palladium was chosen as the central interest by the BJA to celebrate the recent changes to the Hallmarking Act which gave it precious metal status for the first time.

According to the group, the winning selections will appear at the Jewellery Show 2010, which is scheduled to take place in February at the Spring International Fair.

Only designer jewellers and jewellery companies registered and operating in the UK are permitted to participate and the deadline for submitting entries is 18th November.
