Palladium and platinum detection kits licensed by Luminos 13th February 2008
Luminos has signed an exclusive licence agreement with the University of Pittsburgh which will allow the company to develop and sell kits used to detect palladium and platinum.
The detection kits make use of a new fluorescent sensor developed in professor Kazunori Koide's lab at the university's department of chemistry.
The technology is capable of quantitatively detecting palladium or platinum in samples quickly and effectively using a fluorescent signal.
According to Dr Russel Hart, general partner of Luminos, the technology has major implications for a number of product areas including the quantitative detection of palladium contamination in pharmaceutical products and APIs.
"We will develop a kit to measure the metal at the lab bench during the chemical synthetic process," explained Dr Hart.
"In an in-vitro diagnostic application, the fluorescent sensor can detect platinum containing chemotherapeutic agents, such as cisplatin, in patient serum allowing for correct therapeutic dosing. We will be evaluating a POC test for this application in the coming months. We also see applications at companies that use these two metals for industrial and commercial goods such as in the manufacturing of catalytic converters, jewellery and dental products."
Dr Hart expects the first product using the technology to be available commercially later on this year.
