Output halted at Anglo Platinum mine after worker death 17th September 2008
Anglo Platinum has confirmed that operations at its Amandelbult mine in South Africa have been suspended temporarily after a worker died there on Monday (September 15th).
The world's largest producer of platinum explained that all blasting and mining work has been halted as it prepares to conduct an investigation into the death.
Simon Tebele, a spokesman for the company, said: "The entire mine is not producing."
Mr Tebele also refused to confirm the extent to which production has been affected or when the mine - which is Anglo platinum's second-biggest - will be reopened.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) warned the company recently to "pull up its socks" in relation to safety as the latest death is the sixth recorded so far this year at Amandelbult.
