Outages hit Anglo Platinum's smelters 11th October 2007

Power outages have affected operations at two of Anglo Platinum's mines, it has been reported.

The power cuts affected the functioning of two of the platinum giant's smelters at the Waterval and Mortimer operations in Rustenburg.

Simon Tebele, Anglo Platinum spokesman, told Reuters: "Our two smelters are affected, they go on and off. We will assess the impact on output on Friday."

News of the outages comes after the South African state electricity provider Eskom this week confirmed that would be unable to meet both domestic and foreign demand for power.

Eskom cited the unduly cold weather, heavy levels of precipitation and an ongoing maintenance programme as the reasons for the shortages.

Fani Zulu, Eksom spokesperson, also claims that the South African people's failure to respond to calls to cut down on power use had also contributed to the problem.
