Operations continue at Anglo Platinum despite worker deaths 19th August 2008

Anglo Platinum has revealed that it has not shut down its operation following the deaths of two workers over the weekend.

Lesiba Seshoka, a spokesperson for the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), said: "On Saturday, a mineworker died at Mogalakwena mine outside Mokopane while another mineworker lost his life at another Anglo Platinum operation at Amandelbult."

The incidents were confirmed by Anglo Platinum with Simon Tebele revealing that the death at the Amendelbult operation took place on Monday with investigations into the matter still underway.

He said that the Department of Minerals and Energy would determine whether there would be any closures.

The South African government usually shuts down operations temporarily following deaths at the mine so that companies can investigate and make any necessary repairs.
