Online jewellery sales increase 21st November 2005

Online jewellery sales are set to soar this Christmas, according to a recent study, with platinum set to benefit.

Research by comScore Networks claims that consumer spending on non-travel goods at US internet sites will exceed $19 billion during November and December, 24 per cent up on 2004.

The news comes as figures show that online jewellery and watch sales in the US are up 32 per cent for the year so far, to £1,147 million.

Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore Networks believes that customers are gaining confidence in internet transactions and thinks online buying is good value for the consumer.

"Comparison shopping and web search engines not only provide consumers with an efficient means for navigating this complex shopping environment, but also cause online retailers to engage in more competitive pricing," he said.

Comparison shopping sites attracted more than 54 million US visitors in October, a 52 per cent increase on a year ago.

One reason for the boost in online purchasing power is the desire for more high-end goods, with platinum's exclusivity and image helping to cement its place on many 'wish-lists'.
