Oleds offer flat screen revolution 2nd May 2007

Flat screen televisions are set to undergo another revolution as the television market continues to boom.

Demand for flat screen televisions has increased substantially over recent years and the LCD-TV market is expected to reach €4.1 billion by 2011, up from €1.7 billion this year, according to market analyst iSuppli.

However, the next wave of demand is likely to be in the organic light-emitting diode (Oled) flat screen television market, which claims to offer the cleanest and crispest images ever seen.

Using an iridium complex, the image produced by the technology has been described in the Financial Times as akin to looking out of a window.

Sony and Canon are both due to begin selling the Oled screens by the end of this year, while Toshiba is planning to roll out the panels in its flat screen televisions by the end of 2009, meaning that the flat screen television market could be in for yet another revolution that will push up demand over the rest of the decade.
