Oakland launches diesel emissions programme 10th January 2006
The Port of Oakland has begun a programme to replace large diesel trucks with lower emission vehicles.
It was announced yesterday that the port had awarded a $1.5 million contract to technology development firm TIAX to begin the programme to replace around 60 trucks.
Commercial truck owners who trade in their pre-1987 vehicles will receive $25,000 towards the purchase of a cleaner and more fuel-efficient post 1999 model.
Erin Kassoy, senior engineer at TIAX said: "Our work has the potential to reduce the risk of emissions-induced chronic diseases and significantly improve the overall quality of life in the area."
It is hoped that nearly 100 tons of nitrogen oxide and over ten tons of diesel particulate emissions will be reduced through the project.
The scheme is only open to trucks that have operated in the Port of Oakland continuously for the past two years and have made at least 400 trips over the last 12 months.
