Numsa launches Anglo Platinum strike 4th September 2007
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has announced that it is taking strike action against Anglo Platinum.
As many as 1,500 workers have downed tools at Anglo platinum's Rustenburg operations over concerns relating to improvements to benefits for workers due for next year.
According to Donald Mntlane, the local Numsa organiser, workers are concerned that those improvements are to be eroded by Anglo Platinum and as such the union has launched an indefinite strike.
"Employers had agreed to a ten per cent wage increase offer for the term of one year in the CCMA mediation, but later demanded that the term be extended for the second year at a reduced increase of 9.5 per cent," Mr Mntlane claimed.
The industrial action will affect the Waterval Smelters, Metal Refineries and Precious Metals Refinery at Anglo Platinum's Rustenburg facilities.
