NUM to meet Implats over new offer 8th August 2005

South Africa's National Union of Miners (NUM) has agreed to meet the country's second largest platinum miner over a revised pay offer.

Impala Platinum (Implats) has offered a slightly revised deal to the NUM, and NUM negotiator Frans Baleni explained that the group will be putting the new offer to its members.

Implats and the NUM will meet on Thursday to discuss the new offer, Mr Baleni confirmed, and the NUM will then take away the revised offer – devised by Impala with the help of a private mediator – and put it to a vote for their members to decide.

Human resources executive at Implats, Mike Teke confirmed that the company would be meeting the NUM on Thursday, and admitted that the new offer would be discussed by the parties.

However, he refused to comment on whether Implats had put a higher offer on the table.

Talks broke down after the NUM demanded a ten per cent wage increase, while Implats would only sanction an increase of between six and 6.5 per cent, but it appears at least one side has decided to give some ground on the matter.
