NUM refers Impala Platinum wage dispute to mediators 25th June 2009

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) confirmed today (25th June) that it will call in mediators to resolve its row with Impala Platinum over wages.

Impala, the world's second-largest producer of platinum, has only offered its workers a 6.5 per cent pay increase, some way short of their demand for 20 per cent.

With such a significant discrepancy in the figures, the NUM - South Africa's biggest mineworkers' union - decided the dispute would be best resolved independently.

"We totally reject this kind of harassment and are referring the matter," said Eddie Majadibodu, Negotiator for the union.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration will now review the situation and could issue a certificate of non-resolution - which gives miners' the right to strike - if it is not settled.

Wage talks in South Africa are particularly crucial for the pgm industry in the country as strikes will inevitably lead to a decline in production.
