NUM postpones Angloplat strike 29th September 2004

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has announced that it is postponing plans to stage a strike at South African pgm giant Angloplat.

The move comes after the world's largest platinum producer tabled a new wage offer in an ongoing dispute over pay yesterday.

The NUM said that the strike, which had been planned for today, would now be delayed while its members examined the new conditions.

NUM deputy general secretary Archie Palane told Reuters that further talks were now scheduled for today in place of the strike in a bid to resolve the issue.

"With regard to Angloplat, they have come up with a revised offer which we have agreed to take back to our members tomorrow. As a result of their offer we have decided to suspend the strike action pending feedback from members," he said.

However, the NUM remains in conflict over proposed pay increases with Implats, the world's second largest platinum producer.
