Norwegians test hydrogen infrastructure 11th May 2006

Worldwide fuel cell and hybrid manufacturer Quantum Fuel Systems is to provide 15 hydrogen-fuelled hybrid Priuses for a green transport initiative in Norway which will explore the viability of hydrogen-powered transport.

Miljobil Grenland, participant in the Norwegian Hydrogen Highway (HyNor) initiative, has ordered the vehicles as part of a demonstration showing how hydrogen energy infrastructure will operate along a 360 mile stretch of road connecting the capital Oslo and Stavanger.

Organisers of the initiative intend to show Norway – and indeed the world – how green technology can be successfully implemented and how commercially viable hydrogen-powered transport can be with the appropriate infrastructure in place.

The scheme will feature buses, taxis, consumer cars in city centres, suburbs and towns along the route between the major oil centre of Western Norway and along a major transport corridor.

Bjorn Nenseth, managing director of Miljobil Grenland, commented: "We see this as a new and interesting segment of zero emission technology for the transportation sector, that complements our activities on electric cars."

President of Quantum, Alan Niedzwiecki expressed his satisfaction in aiding the project, with an eye to imminent global adoption of hybrid technology.

"We believe this program will help expedite the expansion of a hydrogen infrastructure, grow the acceptance of hydrogen as a transportation fuel and bridge the technology gap between conventional gasoline vehicles and fuel cell vehicles, as this technology of the future is being commercialised," he said.
