Northam recoups R71.9m from mine blaze losses 22nd June 2005
Northam Platinum has received a final R71.9 million lump sum from its insurers as a result of the fire that swept through the company's mine in September.
Northam recouped R10.5 million for material damage and R61.4 million for the loss of business during the mine shutdown.
The package is the final stage of the settlement, which has heartened investors in the firm after a difficult year.
Northam Platinum said it lost more than 10,000 troy ounces of precious metals as a result of the fire, which affected the firm's mine located near Thabazimbi on the northern limb of the Bushveld in the Limpopo province.
Nine people were killed and the mine was shut for the whole of October, only reopening in November.
The South African miner revealed in February that its pgm output fell by 18.3 per cent in the first half of the current financial year, with the blaze playing its part in a sharp decline from 2003-04 figures.
