Northam Platinum is believed to be on the verge of announcing a major black economic empowerment (BEE) deal.

The company has told shareholders to exercise caution in their shares and that has led many in the industry to predict that Northam is planning to unveil a long-awaited BEE agreement.

One market source told MiningMX that a deal is "imminent", with the likely players set to include Northam, Anglo Platinum and Mvelaphanda Resources.

Northam Platinum said on Wednesday that it was in talks that could affect its share price and it is widely anticipated that those talks relate to a BEE deal that would help to ensure Northam is able to comply with the upcoming standards for mining firms to be part-owned by BEE investors.
