Norilsk posts second-quarter platinum and palladium output rise 2nd August 2010

Norilsk Nickel recorded a rise in pgm production during the second quarter of 2010, it has been confirmed.

The Russian metals giant posted platinum output of 198,000 oz, representing a leap of 13.8 per cent from the figure of 174,000 oz for the equivalent period in 2009.

Palladium production increased by 5.1 per cent from 765,000 oz to 804,000 oz, while nickel output reached 75,230 tonnes, up by 5.4 per cent from 71,394 tonnes.

Norilsk also revealed that its second-quarter copper output was 102,551 tonnes, which was an improvement of 2.8 per cent from the 99,793 tonnes produced in Q2 2009.

The company, which produces half of the world's palladium and a fifth of the world's nickel, announced that it would not be changing its 2010 nickel output forecast of between 299,000 tonnes and 309,00 tonnes.

Norilsk enjoyed a strong quarter at its Russian operations, with nickel output up from 56,487 tonnes to 57,270 tonnes and copper production up from 94,385 tonnes to 94,693 tonnes, both on a year-on-year basis.

Founded in 1993, Norilsk Nickel also has a presence in the US through its subsidiary, Stillwater Mining Company.
