Norilsk Nickel names new international team 12th September 2007

Norilsk Nickel has named Peter Breese as Chief Executive of its international mining and metallurgical division, alongside a series of new appointments.

Mr Breese joins the firm having previously occupied the role of Chief Operating Officer at LionOre Mining International.

He brings to the role over 20 years of experience in the mining sector with Impala Platinum, Mimosa Mining and Zimasco.

Norilsk, which is the world's largest palladium and nickel miner, has also confirmed a raft of new appointments at senior level at its international division.

Gerhard Potgieter joins from African Rainbow Minerals as Managing Director of Norilsk's African divisions, while Ian Purdy will take up the role of Managing Director of Norilsk Nickel Australia. He had previously been Director of Finance and Strategy at LionOre Australia.

Meanwhile, Gary Johnson, formerly Managing Director of LionOre technology, is now the Director of Norilsk Process Technology.

Tav Morgan, Head of Mining at Norilsk, said "The creation of this strong, internationally focused executive team marks an important step in Norilsk Nickel's development as we continue to strengthen our leadership position in the global mining and metals industry.

"The international operations have an exciting future ahead with a combination of nickel sulphide and laterite operations, a solid resource base, a strong production growth profile and a highly experienced management team, supported by a portfolio of processing technologies."
