Nkwe Platinum predicts 1m oz output of platinum 14th May 2007

Nkwe Platinum's planned mine developments could result in an output of up to one million ounces of platinum annually, a senior official has reported.

Managing Director Maredi Mphahlele predicted that the mines at Garatouw and Eerstegeluk could produce between 600,000 oz and one million ounces of platinum annually once fully operational.

Moreover, with the company currently working "flat out" on a pre-feasibility study, the Garatouw mine could begin production by 2011, he said.

In an interview with Mining Weekly, he added that the two mines are expected to cost the company a total of $300 million to develop, with the lion's share of the investment going to Garatouw on account of the Eerstegeluk site's suitability for a cheaper-to-operate open cast mine.

Meanwhile, further outlay of up $500 million is also expected for the construction of a base metal refinery, although the burden will most likely be shared with a partner.

Mr Mphahlele also confirmed that the company is looking to join the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and transfer its primary listing from the Australian Stock Exchange to London's Alternative Investment Market by September.
