Nkwe chief eyes up platinum sector 2nd June 2004

Australian based firm Nkwe Platinum is targeting a mid-tier entry into South Africa's Bushveld platinum mining sector, according to its managing director.

Nkwe Platinum chief Craig Oliver told investors today that the outfit was hoping to establish itself in the market, adding that the firm was fully behind the process of Black Economic Empowerment, including the "certainty and mutual benefit it provides".

Mr Oliver went on to highlight some of the progress that Nkwe had made since its inception, drawing attention to an increase in its holdings of key areas from 8,000 ha to 25,000 ha.

"We are focused on further contiguous acquisitions, namely strategic, significant blocks close to our existing projects and within a five to 10 kilometre radius, rather than any broad-scale acquisitions," he added.

Nkwe Platinum is expecting to start platinum mining at the De Wildt and Rooderand properties within the next five years, possibly as early as two years time.

Nkwe Platinum raised A$10 million when it launched an initial public offering in September on the Australian Stock Exchange.
