Nissan establishes Japanese fuel cell pilot 28th December 2005

Nissan has announced it has leased the technology behind its fuel cell vehicle, based on the X-Trail utility model, to Japan.

The manufacturer has solicited approval from the government to run the vehicles on public roads and is now seeking to develop the nascent fuel cell technology in the country.

The X-Trail model boasts a 370km range thanks to an improve fuel cell stack, reports Fuel Cell Works.

While the size has decreased by almost two-thirds its output capacity has been ramped up to 90 kilowatts, an improvement of 5kW on the old model.

The vehicle now boasts a maximum speed of 150km/h, with the continuing advances of the industry indicating a growing commercialisation.

Mazda announced last week that it is to begin leasing the RX-8 fuel cell powered car at the beginning of next year.

Hyundai recently announced that it would release as mass produced fuel cell version of its Tucson SUV in five years time, while Toyota says it too is developing a fuel cell car.
