Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan has forked out $100,000 for a platinum ring at a Hollywood store.

Ms Sheridan, who plays Edie Britt in the popular television programme, bought the vintage platinum ring from renowned Hollywood jeweller Neil Lane while visiting the store.

According to In Touch magazine, the actress decided to splash out on the piece as a gift to herself to celebrate her 42nd birthday.

Platinum is becoming an increasingly popular choice among celebrities looking for a stand-out piece of jewellery, as highlighted by recent sightings of the likes of tennis ace Serena Williams, baseball idol Cal Ripken Jr and even the UK's very own Duchess of Cornwall.

Stars of the stage and screen have also been seen donning platinum jewellery and the fact that so many idols are wearing the precious metal has helped to boost its image and popularity among the public at large.

That popularity looks set to continue when Ms Sheridan next steps out in her latest acquisition, although most people are unlikely to afford a birthday present as expensive as the one from Neil Lane's boutique.

The designer is renowned for his work with the stars and is famed for providing some of Holywod's biggest names with pieces for awards ceremonies including the Golden Globes and Oscars.
