Ngezi stoppage hits Zimplats' quarterly figures 30th July 2004
Zimbabe Platinum Mines (Zimplats) has released its latest quarterly figures which show that the labour dispute that it endured in June has had a negative impact on its operations.
Zimplats revealed that the total volume of pgms mined was lower than the budgeted amount as a result of the three week stoppage.
Total volume of filtered platinum concentrate at the firm's smelter stood at 17,094 tonnes, the lowest quarterly figure for the year - even though there were the most production days at 92.
Tonnes milled for the quarter were reported to be low because of unrest at the Ngezi Mine.
However, in the report Zimplats makes clear that all the employees of the mining contractor who took part in the stoppage are now working, with the situation back to normal.
In a statement Zimplats commented: “The incident resulted from a highly politicised working environment and some deficiencies in the management of labour relations.”
Profit stood at $8.048 million, with the problems of the Zimbabwean dollar, higher operating costs and duties on imports taking their toll.
