A next generation hybrid vehicle featuring greatly enhanced fuel efficiency has been presented among other hybrid vehicles during an international showcase.

General Motors (GM) unveiled the Saturn Vue Green Line compact SUV at this year's Michelin Challenge Bibendum, the annual event showcasing sustainable forms of transportation.

It received top rating in the fuel economy category as it consumes up to 20 per cent less fuel than a conventional petrol vehicle.

The company also unveiled eight new alternative engine designs, including fuel cell models.

One of these, the HydroGen3, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle based on a Vauxhall Zafira platform, won top marks across three categories.

The HyroGen3 is currently undergoing practical testing in Germany and is powered by 200 hydrogen cells stacked beneath its bonnet.

General Motors Thailand recently announced a deal that could result in the first hybrid pick-ups appearing in the country.

The agreement will see it receive hybrid fuel system equipment from US Energy Initiatives. The first vehicles could appear as early as the end of this year.
