New ruthenium glucometer launched 9th April 2008
Arkray Piramal Medical has launched and a new glucometer that contains ruthenium.
The Glucocard 01 uses a combination of a ruthenium-based mediator and thin film carbon-coated electrodes which make the testing strips free from temperature changes and humidity therefore ensuring a very accurate result.
Traditional glucometers use photometric technology with the enzyme on the strip reacting with the glucose in the blood to produce a colour read by the meter.
But the biosensor technology found in the Glucocard 01 sees the glucose produce a current when it reacts with the enzyme on the strip.
This can be measured by the meter for a more accurate result than a measurement of colour.
"One of the key barriers to self-monitoring that still remains is the lack of confidence in self-care technology. We are continually committed to developing products that improve the quality of life of diabetes patients," said Hidehiro Itokawa, Chairman of Arkray Piramal Medical.
"Glucocard 01 offers a high level of accuracy and precision and hence will provide better self-monitoring options to the patients," he added.
