New platinum coin to celebrate Obama 17th September 2008
A small jewellery company in Birmingham has announced that it is producing commemorative platinum coins featuring US presidential nominee Barack Obama.
The Democrat candidate will go head-to-head with Republican rivals John McCain and Sarah Palin as he bids to become the world's most powerful man on November 4th.
In preparation for the election, Windsor, Elizabeth & Windsor (WEW) has already sold more than 300 of the coins to the party to distribute among the key members of its campaign.
The limited edition coins, which are also being made in gold and silver, depict Obama's head, along with a picture of the White House and the legend 'President of the United States of America'.
They have been well received in the US, to the extent that a television advert promoting them is set to be launched and the possibility of creating more locally-produced versions has been mooted.
A spokesman for WEW told the Birmingham Post that if Obama wins the election, the company intends to produce the coins in huge numbers.
He said: "Our coins can take up to several months to manufacture. In order to maintain the lustre and unique quality finish of our merchandise, products are hand-finished by expert craftsman right here in the UK."
The moulds for the coins will go on display today (September 17th) as part of the Birmingham Art Fair at the Gas Hall on Chamberlain Square.
