A new platinum coin will be made available to US collectors from the first week of next month, it was confirmed on Friday (20th November).

US Mint officials announced that the 2009 American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof coin can be ordered from 3rd December at noon Eastern Time onwards.

The coin is the first of a new six-year programme designed to celebrate democracy by featuring the six principles of the Preamble of the United States Constitution.

Chief engraver John Mercanti said: "The 2009 design depicts four faces representing the diversity of our nation, with the clothing and hair weaving together symbolising the
principle 'To Form a More Perfect Union'.

"A new design element, an American Eagle 'privy mark', has been added to the reverse of the coin."

Mr Mercanti added that the obverse (heads) side of the coin will steadfastly feature Lady Liberty, which the mint views as "a symbol of vigilance and resolute faithfulness to duty".

The mint, which was first established in 1792, will create 8,000 units of the new coin at its West Point facility in New York.
