New mining product could help safety 30th May 2008
A mining product could enable platinum mines to improve their safety record when it is brought to South Africa.
Rako Products is expanding into Africa and the Miniveyor products provide mines with safe, portable and powerful conveying systems.
Instead of running on rollers, the system uses a motor-and-tail pulley system meaning it has 'nip points' to ensure the safety of workers.
It can also assist with fall-of-ground accidents because it can move about 30t/h of material and can be put in the right position within a matter of minutes.
According to reports from Mining Weekly, all sectors of the industry could use the product for various tasks including moving bricks over wet cement and cleaning shaft bottoms.
The unit also operates safely in the wet and no special vehicles are needed to transport it to specific destinations.
Anglo Platinum is the first to lead the orders as the platinum firm requires the product for the clearing of spillages and the cleanup of mud rushes.
In addition, the Bleskop mine will use the product to cleanup rocks that fall off permanent conveyor belts on the way to the surface.
