New funding for Canadian fuel cell buses 2nd May 2007
Fuel cell buses in British Columbia, Canada, have been given a boost with an increase in funding.
The fuel cell bus project in the region will be provided with CAN $45 million (£20 million) from the Public Transit Capital Trust and will enable the state to manufacture 20 new fuel cell-powered buses.
British Columbia Premier, Gordon Campbell, said: "This funding will ensure that the hydrogen highway that will run from Whistler to Vancouver, Surrey and Victoria will become a reality."
Speaking at the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells 2007 international conference and trade show in Vancouver, Premier Campbell added: "Our goal is to see the world's first fleet of fuel cell buses on BC roads by the end of 2009 to showcase BC's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the potential of hydrogen technology as an energy solution."
It was also suggested that the hydrogen highway could also be extended after 2010, to run from Whistler as far as San Diego.
