New diesel fuel injector technology to help meet Euro 6 emissions target 3rd September 2008
Delphi Corporation announced yesterday (September 2nd) that it is to launch a new diesel fuel injection system which will allow vehicles to meet future emissions targets.
The firm is set to roll out the Delphi Direct Acting Common Rail System to help address the Euro 6 emissions reduction requirement, which will come into force in 2014.
Diesel engines will need to reduce their NOx emissions from 250mg/km to 80mg/km, while also cutting particulate matter limits from 25mg/km to 5mg/km.
In addition, CO2 emission rates are also being discussed at a regulatory level, with the EU already proposing the ambitious target of 120g/km, to be reached by 2012.
The patented system will help as it involves the injector needle being activated directly by a piezo ceramic actuator, thus sending fuel into the combustion chamber at a much quicker rate and subsequently lowering emissions.
