New body to promote cleaner diesel vehicles in the US 3rd February 2009

A new body was launched in the US yesterday (2nd February) in order to champion the environmental benefits of clean diesel passenger vehicles.

The US Coalition for Advanced Diesel Cars, which was founded by BorgWarner Inc. and Robert Bosch LLC, will lobby legislators at all levels to back a number of key emissions-related policies.

The group is keen to promote the fact that clean diesel vehicles - which make use of pgm-based catalytic converters - offer 30 per cent better fuel economy and can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25 per cent.

Executive Director Jeffrey Breneman said: "One of the most effective and immediate ways to improve the environment and bolster American energy independence is for federal, state and local officials to implement technology-neutral public policies rewarding innovation and offering multiple solutions for optimising fuel efficiency and CO2 reductions."

It is believed that the body will push for lawmakers to incorporate science-based policies and regulations - a strategy which it believes will encourage innovation and create much-needed jobs.

Scott Gallett, Vice-President of Marketing for BorgWarner, added that the move makes logical sense for the government, while also providing the best possible service to consumers.

"Ensuring a level playing field that equally supports a broad portfolio of technology solutions to tackle the serious environmental and energy dependence issues we currently face is really the only approach," he said.
