Anglo Platinum has announced the appointment of Neville Nicolau as Chief Executive Officer of the company.

Mr Nicolau joins the world's largest platinum producer after gaining nearly 20 years experience in the gold-mining industry.

Fred Phaswana, chairperson at Anglo Platinum, said he was delighted to announce the appointment.

"Nicolau's extensive experience in deep underground mining, gained over many years in a number of challenging technical and operational roles, positions him well to realise the company's significant ambitions as a world-leading platinum producer," he explained.

He also thanked Norman Mbazima and Duncan Wanblad for filling the role in the interim period, stating that they had both made "considerable contributions" to the firm.

Mr Nicolau was equally excited to be joining the mining giant and said: "I am really looking forward to the challenge of leading the company and its people to achieve the goal of top-level performance, with safety at its core."

Meanwhile, the firm's Unki mine has passed its one-year milestone of lost-time injury-free hours.

Ryan Illingworth, Project-House TWP Engineer for Mining and Infrastructure, said that it was an example of the way the firm prioritises safety.

"Safety has been given the highest priority at Unki right from the design stage," he revealed.
