Motorola develops fuel cell-powered mobile phone 16th January 2008
A mobile phone fuel cell, which fits into a normal handset, has been produced by Angstrom Power.
Motorola could implement the hydrogen-powered EverOn battery into its SLVR L7 handsets.
According to Angstrom, the fuel cell is more efficient than lithium ion batteries and takes only ten minutes to recharge.
Hydrogen fuel cells may also be better for the environment with European activists claiming that lithium batteries clog up landfill sites and contaminate water sources.
Paul Zimmerman, a Spokesman for Angstrom, said that being able to fit it to a traditional handset was one of the main advantages of the new technology.
The product has already been trialled for six months, according to reports from businessgreen.com and the technology could be ready for commercial use as early as 2010.
Jerry Hallmark, a Spokesman for Motorola, said that despite a lack of hydrogen refuelling products on the market, the need for "efficient powering solutions" was growing.
