More hybrids on the way 24th January 2006
As demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles in the market continues to increase, more and more manufacturers are looking to capitalise on the green sector.
A number of new hybrid vehicles are to be debuted in the months ahead, largely on the back of the success in Toyota's Prius model, which has managed to bring strong returns in a market that has seen falling sales for the likes of US giants General Motors (GM) and Ford.
In a bid to buy into this potentially lucrative market, GM unveiled a low-cost hybrid at the North American International Auto Show, while Ford used the event to launch its Reflex show car, a sports model featuring a diesel hybrid powertrain engine.
Over the next two years, companies including Hyundai, Lexus and Nissan are all planning to roll out hybrid models in an attempt to get a share of the market.
The interest in fuel-efficient and clean energy vehicles is growing, particularly in the US, where increasingly strict emissions regulations means people can save substantial sums of money by purchasing hybrid models.
