MoD considers fuel cells 19th January 2007

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is considering using fuel cells in its new technology as part of an effort to meet the growing power needs of the modern military.

Modern electronic equipment used by the army requires an increasing amount of power to supply it and one of the methods that could be used to achieve this is through fuel cells.

Catalyst innovator Oxford Catalysts Group has revealed that its hydrogen-on-demand generation technology for fuel cell systems is now shortlisted for inclusion in the MoD's Portable Power Systems research programme.

The research programme is aiming to develop prototype power sources within three years.

The development of fuel cells to supply power to the military has been a fertile source of research and development in the US over recent years as it looks to discover a cheap, viable and environmentally friendly solution to its army's power needs.
