Mobile status symbols big in India 18th January 2006

High-end mobile phones are becoming the must-have fashion item among the rich and famous in India.

According to the Times of India, an increasing number of people are choosing mobiles which are also fashion accessories, with platinum-covered handsets one option favoured by those that can afford it.

While platinum jewellery is already popular in India and across the world, mobile phones are now being regarded as must-have accessories, provided that they are covered in metals such as platinum and encrusted with diamonds.

Nokia's exclusive Vertu range of mobiles already use platinum in their design and an increasing number of handset manufacturers are realising the potential of making mobiles stand out, for example by engraving them with platinum.

Model Aditi Gowitrikar is one of those to own a high-end mobile, of which she gushes: "I simply love it, it's so cute!"

The market is clearly growing for high-end consumer goods which are considered style accessories and platinum is becoming more and more common in this sector, with high prices for the metal apparently not putting off those with money to spend.
