Mimosa Mining Company revealed today (26th March) that it is planning to expand platinum output at its flagship mine above 100,000 oz.

The present level of platinum production at the Mimosa mine, which is located on the Great Dyke in south-west Zimbabwe, was achieved following a $23.2 million Phase 5 expansion in 2007.

That project also saw the facility improve its annual pgm production, which also includes platinum, palladium and rhodium, from 165,000 oz to 195,000 oz.

However, Managing Director Winston Chitando confirmed that the company will embark on a Phase 6 expansion - with a pre-feasibility study taking place early next year - having completed a scoping study.

"We expect the expansion to bolster revenue generation, profitability and annual platinum output, which currently stands at 100 000 oz per year," he said.

Mr Chitando added that the mine, which is owned on a 50:50 basis by Impala Platinum and Aquarius Platinum, has managed to sustain operations at optimal levels, despite Zimbabwe's economic crisis.

The Great Dyke is a layered, platinum-rich complex which is similar to the Bushveld Complex in South Africa and extends for 550km, with a maximum width of 11km.
