Mercedes raises clean engine bar 9th January 2006
Mercedes-Benz has launched what it claims to be the world's cleanest diesel engine at the North American International Auto Show.
The DaimlerChrysler subsidiary unveiled its E320 Bluetec, which has enhanced clean engine technology to reduce emissions.
"Bluetec diesel vehicles have the potential to meet the world's most stringent exhaust emissions standards, including those of all 50 US States," explains Mercedes Car Group chief and DaimlerChrysler chief executive Dieter Zetsche.
He added: "As a powerful, economical and clean drive system, BLUETEC can significantly help American drivers continue to enjoy large, powerful cars for many years to come.
Mercedes plans to have the new engines in showrooms across the US in spring of this year and success in the American market will dictate when the Bluetec technology is shipped across the world.
Diesel vehicles are becoming increasingly popular with consumers as the unstable oil market has driven many motorists away from gasoline, while the improving technology to make diesel clean is giving it an environmentally-friendly reputation.
