Mercedes brings forward fuel cell-powered B-class release date 16th March 2009

Mercedes has revealed that it is bringing forward the release date of a new batch of vehicles which will include some powered by fuel cells, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Battery-electric cars have grown in popularity as some companies have experienced cost and hydrogen infrastructure issues in relation to mass producing fuel cell-powered units.

However, Mercedes remains faithful to the potential of the technology and confirmed at the Geneva Motor Show that its new B-class will be released this year, ahead of schedule.

Dr Thomas Weber, the company's Head of Research and Development, told the newspaper: "We have changed the timeline for their introduction from 2010-11 to 2009.

"This shows our clear commitment to roll out this technology around the globe."

A comprehensive network of hydrogen filling stations could be established in Germany for a cost of around €1.7 billion (£1.56 billion), he added.

The paper also notes that Mercedes intends to focus a large percentage of its €8 billion budget on further developing technologies for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

"We have to make our zero emissions vehicles fascinating and beautiful," said Dr Weber.

Mercedes, which is owned by Daimler, was first established in 1881.
